Where does Nordic Walking come from?

Nordic walking was born from Cross country skiing.

The Winter Olympics has inspired many people to get active and have a go at a variety of new sports.

Nordic walking is a perfect activity for all abilities and ages. We ensure we have sessions from gentle paces to cardio stride outs. If you have any mobility issues, or need a low impact sport to get you fit, then Nordic walking is perfect. As you learn to disperse the energy from your lower body into you upper body you can almost feel lighter through your ankles, knees and hip. If you are already an active person then Nordic walking is wonderful cross training sport that compliments a variety of sports such as running, swimming, tennis, golf and of course, skiing!

Nordic walking is also a sustainable activity; just grab poles and go! Dress for the weather and enjoy the pleasures of Mother nature and her outdoor gym.

Nordic walking targets 90% of your muscles and you burn 45% more calories. You are abs are contracting at each step. On average you take 1000 steps for every kilometre, which can be walked in about 15 minutes. That means you are abs are contracting 1000 times in 15 minutes. That’s almost like trying to do 1000 sit ups in 15 minutes. Could you do that many? Why is it important to target the abs? it helps build a strong core which can the eliminate a lot of issues such as back ache, or looking older with the hunched back, banana curve shape of your body, and help support the body and improve balance. Think of your core or trunk, as the strong section of the tree. Keep it strong and supple to take on the stresses of the world. Nordic walking also target the whole core, so unlike sit ups and crunchies, you are also working out the outer abs.

Nordic walking is also a great way to age stronger making sure those functional movements that many people lose before they are ready; such as getting up and out of a chair, getting shopping out of the car, reaching up to high shelves, picking up grandchildren for a hug, even getting out and playing with the kids. If you are self sufficient you don’t wont to lose the ability to live independently. Could you cope with not being able to sweep, vacuum, hang out washing, gardening, getting items out of cupboards. The list is endless and you world becomes smaller when you lose the ability to move.

There are many more benefits from Nordic walking as this fun little video shows you. It is an effective exhilarating allover body work out that tickles every part of your body. Goodbye Bingo wings, Love handles and Saddlebags!
